1. Take One of Her Other Rings
If your girlfriend is out of town or if you can borrow one of her rings without her noticing, you can take it to a jeweler. They'll measure the ring and let you know what size engagement ring you should be looking at.

Trace the inside of the ring on a piece of paper and show that to the jeweler instead. You can also pt the right on your own finger and draw a line right under where it sits. A jeweler can use these two methods to estimate your girlfriend's ring size.
2. Have Some of Her Friends Help
This can be a bit trickier, but if you have some friends who are also getting engaged, you can ask one of the friends to take her ring shopping with them. While in the store, the friend can encourage your girlfriend to try on rings as well.
You don't have to pick people who are engaged for this to work. You can ask one of her best friends to take her into a ring store while they're already out shopping. Make it look like a coincidence or something the friend wants to do for fun.
When your friend gets the ring size, they can give it to you.
3. Do Some Artwork
Jewelers are pretty good at estimating ring sizes based on traces. Put together a craft that involves your girlfriend tracing her hand on a piece of paper. Later when she isn't looking, take the paper and show it to your jeweler.
They'll be able to get a rough finger diameter from the picture.
4. Measure Her Finger When She's Asleep
Your girlfriend has to be a deep sleeper for this to work. While she's asleep, take a piece of string or something similar, and cut it to the size of her ring finger. You might want to do this a few times to make sure you get the measurement right.
5. Just Ask Her
Most couples talk about getting engaged before the proposal. During one of these conversations, you can ask your girlfriend for her ring size. Asking her doesn't take the surprise out of the proposal either. She still doesn't know when you're going to buy the ring or how you're going to propose.

When you're trying to find out your girlfriend's ring size, don't spend too much time worrying. You can always get the ring resized later if it doesn't fit quite right. If you aren't sure about her exact ring size, stay on the safe side and go smaller rather than bigger. Smaller rings are easier to resize than rings that are too big.
